Heroes: Something's Amiss

This morning the Mister Fanboy Editorial Staff gathered around the office trough of warm caffeine and happened to discuss last night's episode of Heroes. We all agreed that for a TV show, it was engaging and would keep us interested beyond the 3 episode trial that we swore we would give it (though it's by no means in the same league as Battlestar Galactica or Sopranos, for example). The story, at this point, has just enough twists and turns to keep us interested -for now (we are very fickle). However, to a person, something bugged us about the episode last night, in particular. Now we are not screenwriters, so our apologies if we don't get the terminology correct, but here is the consensus:

The main character-to-loved one interactions were horribly staged, scripted, and acted. For example, the "I love you moment" between Milo and Simone was beyond bad. Similarly, the interaction between Ali and her mother-in-law was so cliched it was painful. And the brush off of Greg by his wife (girlfriend?) was as horrible as the previous two examples. Each one pretty much appeared to be scripted by a 17 year old and seemed forced. In all fairness, when new shows get going, there isn't necessarily a sense that it will survive more than a few episodes. So perhaps folks don't give it their all. Maybe some of the casting was a rush job and the actors haven't had time to make some sort of connection. Or maybe some of the characters, except for possibly Simone, weren't meant to be more than bit players.

Regardless, our collective intelligences was insulted (no, we're not Borgs). So folks over at Heroes, get your shit in gear.

Also, in all fairness, we should point out some of the things we liked:

Hiro and his friend - excellent
The plot twist of Nathan telling the press a lie about his brother
The bald African-American man with his own set of powers and agendas
Claire's injury/attempted rape and, most importantly, the storyline ramifications - what's evil daddy's response?
The FBI Agent - we loved her in Carnivale. Hopefully she gets a chance to shine here too.

I really enjoy the show, and am very happy that they were picked up for the full season. I am curious, the man with the comic strip that tells the future .. is the comic book complete? Can't he skip to the end? I wasn't sure if I missed something there. But I am looking forward to seeing how it all works out. And I was also very happy to see the girl from Carnivale.

Heroes: Love the concept, but am growing cold on the execution. I mean, how many times is the cheerleader girl going to get mangled before the writing team assumes we've got the picture?

My understanding is that the heroin addicted artist (Isaac) only gets dreams while using heroin (very similar to what happened in the recent issue of DC's OMAC by the way). From there, he draws the comics. Hiro, our time/space travelling Japanese friend, reads the comics as he gets them. And Simone, the African-American woman did comment that Isaac was late in submitting his comments to the publisher. My god, was I paying that much attnention to the show.

Sadly, I think we will continue to see he mangled for the rest of the season. Plus she's a cheerleader so lots of H.S. school students are probably secretly cheering it on.

Lighten up! Heroes is not a romantic comedy so I don't think we need to dwell on inter relationships. However, the persona of the cheerleader is going to need some work even with her step dad lurking in the background. The show is starting to develop a dark side and a few clues are emerging so we are left to connect the dots and of course tune in next week which I will do of course. I just wish it wasn't so dark outside when the show comes on!

Hi Mr. Fanboy,
Finally saw it! I agree that the relationships seem cliche and forced, but I think that's due more to lack of chemistry than lazy writing (I've seen some sparking actors pull of some Very Bad Writing Indeed).
The Claire situation infuriated me, as I rage about in my blog, but I agree: seeing Daddy's reaction will be interesting. My theory is this: he's not the bad guy. They're just making us think he is.
Thoughts?
Ciao,
Amy

You know, it's really meaningless at this point for any of us to conjecture, but it sure as hell is a time killer.
